India’s Defence Exports Leap Over 5,500% To ₹38,424 Crore In FY26, Defence Minister Declares Nation A Global Defence Power


India’s defence exports have reached a record ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26, marking a leap of more than 5,500% over the past decade and positioning the country as a rising global defence manufacturing power.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasised that this surge reflects reduced dependence on imports, unprecedented momentum in indigenous production, and approvals of projects worth over ₹8.75 lakh crore to modernise the armed forces and strengthen border areas.

India has emerged as a major player in global defence manufacturing.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in his Independence Day eve message, highlighted that exports of military hardware surged to ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26. This milestone reflects a strong push towards indigenous defence production and manufacturing.

He noted that India is no longer just a country meeting its own security needs. It has become an emerging power in global defence manufacturing and exports.

Singh said that the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has granted approval to projects worth more than ₹8.75 lakh crore in the past year. These projects are aimed at modernising the military and strengthening border areas.

He stressed that the government is determined to reduce dependence on imports and provide unprecedented momentum to indigenous manufacturing.

The Defence Minister pointed out that India’s defence exports have risen from a mere ₹686 crore in 2013-14 to ₹38,424 crore in 2025-26. This represents a leap of more than 5,500% in about a decade.

Domestic defence production has also reached a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY26. This expansion reflects the success of initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

India now exports defence products to more than 80 countries. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) contributed 54.84% of total exports, while the private sector accounted for 45.16%. DPSU exports surged 151% year-on-year, while private sector exports grew 14%.

The Defence Minister also highlighted successful trials of advanced missile systems, including the Agni missile with MIRV technology, RudraM-II, Pinaka long-range guided rockets, and the indigenous ‘Kusha’ long-range surface-to-air missile. These developments have added unprecedented strength to India’s strike capabilities.

He emphasised that strengthening border areas remains a top priority alongside modernisation of the armed forces.

Singh credited government reforms in defence procurement and policy for accelerating the modernisation process. He said India is steadily moving from being a buyer of defence technologies to becoming a creator of them.

The Defence Minister underlined that India’s defence sector is now future-ready, self-reliant, and increasingly integrated into global supply chains.

This transformation has been supported by both public and private industry, with startups, MSMEs, and research institutions playing a larger role in capability development.

India’s defence exports have nearly tripled in the last five years, rising from just over ₹12,800 crore in FY22 to ₹38,424 crore in FY26.

The government has repeatedly stated its ambition of transforming India into a global defence manufacturing hub. Recent export growth suggests that this objective is gaining traction.

Industry leaders believe the next challenge lies beyond production volumes. The focus must now shift to building sovereign technologies that are scalable and capable of addressing real-world battlefield requirements.

The record export figures are a clear signal that India is no longer just a major buyer of military hardware. It is increasingly emerging as a manufacturer, innovator, and exporter of defence technologies to the world.

‘No Change’, India Holds Firm On Indus Treaty Suspension Amid Sharif’s ‘Red-Line’ Ultimatum


India has once again underscored its uncompromising position on the Indus Waters Treaty, firmly rejecting Pakistan’s latest threats.

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that New Delhi’s stance remains unchanged, linking any revival of the 1960 accord to Islamabad taking irreversible steps to end cross-border terrorism.

The sharp response followed remarks from Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who declared that the suspension of the treaty was “illegal” and warned that Pakistan’s water supply was a “red line.” His office posted on X that “every drop of Pakistan’s water is our red line” and threatened a “direct response” if India did not alter its course.

India dismissed this rhetoric as baseless. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a weekly briefing that “there is no change in the way we think,” making clear that India’s decision to suspend the treaty after the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack remains firmly in place. That attack, which killed 26 civilians, was carried out by cross-border terrorists operating from Pakistani soil.

The Pahalgam incident triggered severe hostilities. India launched Operation Sindoor to dismantle terror infrastructure, with military exchanges continuing until May 10, when Pakistan sought a ceasefire under pressure. The suspension of the treaty was thus not an isolated act but part of a broader strategic response to terrorism.

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in September 1960, was intended to regulate the sharing of the Indus River system. Its abeyance marks a significant departure from decades of water-sharing arrangements, reflecting India’s hardened stance against Pakistan’s continued support for proxy warfare.

India also rebuffed external commentary. Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, during a visit to Islamabad, raised issues relating to Jammu and Kashmir. Jaiswal responded unequivocally, affirming that “the whole of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable part of India.”

He stressed that the real concern for the international community should be Pakistan’s human rights abuses in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and its use as a base for cross-border terrorism.

New Delhi has consistently highlighted atrocities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including suppression of dissent, denial of rights, and exploitation of resources. India has urged global actors to hold Islamabad accountable for these abuses rather than indulge its diversionary tactics.

Despite Pakistan’s repeated claims that water is its “red line,” India has made it clear that the treaty will not be revived until Islamabad credibly halts its sponsorship of terrorism. The uncompromising tone signals that New Delhi views the issue not merely as a matter of water-sharing but as inseparable from national security and sovereignty.

Indo‑Russian Medium Transport Aircraft Frozen As India Explores New Options

India’s long‑standing quest for a modern medium transport aircraft has been marked by ambitious plans, shifting requirements and complex negotiations with Russia. Conceived as a joint Indo‑Russian effort at the turn of the century, the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) was intended to bridge a critical gap in the Indian Air Force’s lift capability.

Yet, despite detailed agreements, design phases and years of collaborative work, the project stalled over technical differences—most notably the choice of engines and the demand for a full‑authority digital engine control system.

What followed was Russia’s independent pursuit of the Il‑276 and later the Il‑212, leaving India to weigh whether reviving the original programme or adopting alternative platforms would best serve its operational needs.

The original Indo‑Russian Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) was conceived as a twin‑engine military transport capable of carrying 12,000 kg over 4,700 km or 20,000 kg over 2,000 km.

It was designed to operate in all geographical and climatic conditions, including high‑altitude airfields up to 3,300 m and unpaved runways. Its pressurised cargo compartment cross‑section was to be identical to that of the Il‑76MD, allowing the use of existing cargo‑handling, transportation and airdrop equipment and infrastructure.

Russian sources stated that the aircraft’s dimensions and powerplant would enable it to carry up to 80% of the weapons and military equipment then in Indian service.

Negotiations between India and Russia began in 1999. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) records show that an agreement to prepare a detailed project report for co‑development was signed on 6 June 2001.

A joint design, development and co‑production agreement involving HAL, Ilyushin and Irkut followed later that month.

However, Indian requirements diverged significantly from Russian specifications. In January 2006, Ilyushin’s General Director noted that India’s requirements were “somewhat different,” prompting further discussions and a redesign. A new letter of intent was signed on 24 January 2007, followed by an intergovernmental agreement on joint development on 12 November 2007.

The Preliminary Design Phase (PDP) contract was signed on 12 October 2012, with activities commencing on 1 December 2012. HAL’s 2012–13 annual report confirmed these dates. The 2013–14 report stated that the Joint Technical Preliminary Design Phase had been completed at UAC‑TA in Moscow, while contracts for detailed design, prototype fabrication, testing and certification were still under negotiation.

Russia initially planned to power the MTA with the PS‑90A, later considering the PD‑14 family. The engine became a major stumbling block. The Indian Air Force required a full‑authority digital engine control (FADEC) system, but Russia argued that the PS‑90’s performance did not necessitate one.

In 2016, UAC President Yuri Slyusar admitted that the PS‑90 lacked “full‑fledged FADEC” and that the requirement had been introduced during the program. Concerns also arose about the PS‑90A‑76’s ability to operate safely at Himalayan altitudes, particularly its engine relight capability.

On 13 January 2016, Ilyushin CEO Sergey Velmozhkin confirmed that the joint project had been frozen. Russia continued development independently, re-designating the aircraft as the Il‑276, essentially a further development of the Il‑214/MTA concept with a payload of around 20 tonnes.

By 2024, interest in the Il‑276 waned as the Il‑212 project emerged, intended to replace Russia’s An‑26 and An‑72‑class transports. The Il‑212 was reported to have a maximum payload of 17 tons when powered by two PD‑8 turbofans, though this remains a design target rather than a production specification.

Reviving the Il‑276 project could be attractive for HAL, as it would build on considerable design work already undertaken and potentially involve more technology transfer than a simple foreign assembly arrangement. However, revival would inevitably introduce delays, and the unresolved question of the PS‑90A’s engine‑control system remains.

Current documentation identifies the PS‑90A‑76’s control arrangement as BAC with EEC (RED‑90M) and SAC standby electro‑hydromechanical control. A Russian patent describes the RED‑90 as the main device of a digital engine‑control system “of the FADEC type,” sampling parameters at 50 Hz.

While significant, this does not unequivocally equate to the Western understanding of a modern, redundant FADEC. Russia has continued to modernise the PS‑90 family, and later versions may have moved closer to full‑authority digital control, but confirmation is required before the engine can be described as FADEC‑equipped.

If the PS‑90A‑76 does not meet the FADEC requirement, HAL could consider other Russian aircraft. The Il‑212, with its PD‑8 engines and indigenous electronic automatic control system, offers fuel efficiency and FADEC capability, though its payload falls short of India’s lower limit.

The Il‑76MD‑90A, with a payload of 60 tonnes, could surprisingly meet the MTA requirement if operated in the 18–30 tonne range. It offers a large cargo compartment, rear loading, substantial range and proven infrastructure within the IAF.

Its disadvantages are higher operating costs and larger size, but if the RED‑90M/PS‑90A‑76 system satisfies FADEC requirements, it could serve as an interim solution.

This would provide HAL with a mature platform while buying time to revive and further develop the Il‑276, complete testing and eventually establish indigenous serial production in Bangalore.

Battered At Home By Multiple Rebellions, 'Water Is Our Red Line', Sharif Issues Shocking Comments On Indus Waters Treaty


Shehbaz Sharif’s Independence Day address in Islamabad was marked by familiar rhetoric against India, even as Pakistan faces mounting multiple crises at home.

Sharif threatened a “direct response” over water, accusing India of being an “enemy of peace” for suspending the Indus Waters Treaty after the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. He declared that “every drop” of Pakistan’s water was a “red line” and warned of retaliation if India did not change course.

India suspended the treaty following a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting, arguing that the conditions under which the agreement was signed in 1960 had fundamentally changed.

New Delhi has insisted that the treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan credibly ends its support for cross‑border terrorism. Sharif’s remarks sought to project toughness, but the irony lies in his government’s inability to confront domestic failures while resorting to external threats.

Pakistan’s internal instability is deepening. In Balochistan, nationalist voices have called for Independence Day to be observed as a “Black Day.” Activist Mir Yar Baloch urged global rejection of celebrations, citing Islamabad’s military strikes in Surab that allegedly caused civilian casualties. 

Human rights defenders including Dr Mahrang Baloch and Zara Baloch condemned airstrikes that killed and injured civilians, including children, describing them as violations of international humanitarian law. These reports highlight the profound distrust between Islamabad and Baloch society.

Violence continues in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where a suicide bombing near the Kabal Police Station in Swat killed 17 people, including seven policemen, and injured 27 others.

The attack occurred during protests against deteriorating law and order, underscoring the gap between Islamabad’s claims of controlling militancy and the reality faced by ordinary citizens.

Pakistan‑occupied Jammu and Kashmir has also witnessed unrest, with prolonged protests, clashes, and allegations of manipulation during the 2026 legislative elections.

The Joint Awami Action Committee reported injuries from firing by security forces in Rawalakot and condemned excessive force. India has urged the international community to hold Pakistan accountable for human rights violations, noting that more than 90 people have been killed in recent months amid repression and internet shutdowns.

The political crisis adds another layer of instability. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan remains imprisoned since 2023, with his family denied access for months.

His sons have raised concerns about his health and isolation, while supporters allege politically motivated cases designed to block his return. The crackdown on Khan and his PTI party has eroded Pakistan’s democratic credibility.

Against this backdrop, Sharif’s warnings over water appear less a demonstration of strength than a distraction from domestic turmoil.

Pakistan’s leadership continues to project threats against India while struggling with militant violence, alienation in Balochistan, unrest in PoK, and political repression at home.

The declaration that “every drop” of water is a “red line” risks sounding hollow when viewed against the country’s deepening internal crises. Islamabad’s confrontational rhetoric cannot be separated from the wider instability that threatens its legitimacy and governance.

NSA Ajit Doval Declares India’s Resolve To Strike Hard In First Post-Sindoor Interview


National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has emphasised that India’s tolerance and generosity must never be mistaken for weakness, asserting that the nation is prepared to take risks and strike hard regardless of the consequences, Economic Times reported.

His remarks came in Discovery’s upcoming two-part docuseries, Declassified: Operation Sindoor, which features his first interview since the military operation and provides insight into the thinking behind India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Doval explained that the objective of Operation Sindoor was clearly defined — the destruction of terror camps, particularly those linked to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam.

He stated that the operation was intended not only to neutralise those responsible but also to send a broader message about India’s willingness to respond forcefully to threats.

He underlined that India’s message to the world is unambiguous: tolerance should not be mistaken for weakness, and India can hit hard irrespective of the consequences.

The docuseries brings together India’s military and national security leadership to recount the decisions and events surrounding Operation Sindoor. It features first-hand accounts from officials who oversaw India’s response and examines the decision-making process behind the military action. Doval, in particular, speaks about the resolve that shaped the operation and the calculations that guided India’s response.

Declassified: Operation Sindoor will premiere on Saturday at 9 pm on Discovery and its streaming platform discovery+. The broadcaster noted that the series offers the first detailed public account from Doval since the operation, providing a rare glimpse into the security establishment’s assessment of the threat and the choices made during one of the most serious military confrontations between India and Pakistan in recent years.

Operation Sindoor was launched early on 7 May last year, following the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Indian forces carried out precision strikes against multiple terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Pakistan subsequently launched offensives against India, prompting a series of Indian counter-offensives that were also conducted under Operation Sindoor.

The confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours lasted nearly 88 hours before India and Pakistan reached an understanding on the evening of 10 May, bringing the hostilities to an end.

The operation demonstrated India’s ability to impose costs on its adversary while maintaining control over escalation, reinforcing the credibility of its zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

Doval also cautioned young people against mistaking freedom for mere liberty, urging them to dedicate themselves to the national interest. He warned that India cannot afford to lose its current window of opportunity, stressing that rights should not be misused and that threats exist both within and outside the country.

His words reflect a broader call for vigilance and responsibility among the youth, aligning with the government’s emphasis on resilience and preparedness.

The interview and the docuseries together underscore India’s evolving defence posture, highlighting the strategic resolve that underpinned Operation Sindoor and the lessons it imparted for future confrontations. HAL Should Strive To Supersede Hawk Trainers With Indigenous HLFT-42 Supersonic Trainer


Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s HLFT-42 is India’s ambitious next-generation supersonic lead-in fighter trainer, designed to replace the ageing Hawk MK-132 and prepare pilots for advanced fighters such as the TEJAS MK-2 and the AMCA.

The aircraft is being developed as both a trainer and a light combat jet, with advanced avionics, 11 weapon hardpoints, and a maximum take-off weight of 16.5 tons.

The HLFT-42, or Hindustan Lead-in Fighter Trainer-42, was first unveiled as a scale model at Aero India 2023 in Bangalore. HAL initiated the concept in 2017, and by 2023 reported that the project had reached an advanced stage of development.

The Indian Air Force has expressed its intent to induct the HLFT-42 to replace the Hawk MK-132, which has been in service for over 15 years but lacks the sophistication required for training pilots on fifth-generation aircraft.

HAL has positioned the HLFT-42 as a dual-role platform. It will serve as a supersonic trainer capable of replicating the performance and systems of advanced fighters, while also being combat-ready with 11 hardpoints for weapons including ASTRA beyond-visual-range missiles and ASRAAM close-combat missiles. This ensures that pilots can train in realistic combat conditions while also giving the Air Force a versatile light combat aircraft option.

The aircraft is designed as a single-engine, conventionally swept-wing jet with a bubble canopy. Its projected maximum take-off weight is 16,500 kilograms, and HAL envisions it achieving speeds up to Mach 1.8 with an operational ceiling of 18 kilometres.

Advanced avionics will include an Active Electronically Scanned Array radar, infrared search and track sensors, electronic warfare suites, and a fly-by-wire system. These features will allow the HLFT-42 to simulate the sensor fusion and combat environment of modern fighters.

In 2025, HAL issued a Request for Information for a high-thrust engine capable of producing 95–100 kilonewtons of thrust with a lifespan of at least 6,000 hours. This search is critical to ensuring the HLFT-42 can meet its performance targets. Global manufacturers such as GE Aviation, already powering Tejas variants with F404 and F414 engines, are expected to be contenders.

The HLFT-42 is also being developed as the mothership for HAL’s Combat Air Teaming System (CATS), an unmanned weapon system initiative. This integration highlights HAL’s vision of the HLFT-42 as not just a trainer but a central node in India’s future air combat ecosystem. The aircraft is expected to replace planned derivatives of the TEJAS MK-1A and the SEPECAT Jaguar in this role.

HAL has projected that the prototype of the HLFT-42 will roll out in the early 2030s, with induction into the Indian Air Force around 2035. This timeline aligns with the retirement of the Hawk MK-132, ensuring continuity in pilot training.

The HLFT-42 will bridge the gap between subsonic trainers and frontline combat jets, preparing pilots for the high-speed, high-G conditions of modern air combat.

The HLFT-42 program represents a strategic leap in India’s defence self-reliance. By creating an indigenous supersonic trainer with combat capabilities, HAL is addressing a critical training gap while strengthening India’s aerospace industry. The aircraft is expected to become a cornerstone of India’s pilot training pipeline and a symbol of its growing technological maturity in military aviation.

Hawk And Beyond: Indian Air Force Launches Hunt For 150 Advanced Jet Trainers To Replace Hawk Fleet

The Indian Air Force has initiated the process to acquire 150 advanced jet trainer aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of British Aerospace Hawk MK-132 trainers.

The Request for Information has been issued to global aerospace manufacturers, seeking details of their offerings for what the service designates as Stage-III (F) trainers. These aircraft will form the final stage of training for fighter pilots before they graduate to frontline combat aircraft such as the Tejas, Rafale or Sukhoi Su-30MKI.

Responses to the RFI are due by October 5. The subsequent Request for Proposal is scheduled for December 2027. With trials and evaluations to follow, the aircraft are unlikely to enter service before the 2030s. The IAF has clarified that trials will be conducted on a no-cost-no-commitment basis, a standard practice at this exploratory stage of procurement.

Pilot training in the IAF follows a three-stage pipeline. The first stage, lasting 24 weeks, is conducted on the Pilatus PC-7 MK-II turboprop trainer, now being replaced by the indigenous HTT-40. This phase covers basic flying manoeuvres, aviation theory, navigation and meteorology. After this, cadets are streamed into fighters, transports or helicopters.

The second stage, also 24 weeks, involves specialised training. Fighter stream cadets train on the Kiran MK-II, transport stream cadets on the Dornier-228, and helicopter stream cadets on the Chetak. This phase advances navigation, tactics and aircraft handling skills.

Stage III training is post-commissioning and is conducted on advanced jet trainers such as the Hawk Mk-132. Here, pilots master high-speed manoeuvres, tactical combat skills and advanced instrument flying.

They are introduced to combat systems and combat support systems. After this stage, pilots are posted to operational squadrons, where they continue training on specific aircraft types and progress professionally.

The IAF currently operates at a squadron strength of 29, well below the sanctioned 42.5. Its combined fleet of advanced jet trainers with the Navy stands at 119. The requirement for 150 new trainers suggests preparation for a larger fighter force, with the induction of TEJAS MK-1A, additional Rafales, the TEJAS MK-2 and eventually the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. Expanding the training apparatus is essential to match the growth in combat fleet size.

The absence of advanced trainers in the past had serious consequences. Before the Hawk’s induction in 2008, trainee pilots often transitioned directly from intermediate trainers to high-performance fighters such as the MiG-21. This training gap contributed to a high crash rate.

A Parliamentary Committee report in 2010 noted that 44% of crashes between 2004 and 2010 were due to human error, much of it linked to inadequate training infrastructure.

The new trainers are expected to incorporate advanced capabilities. The RFI specifies fly-by-wire controls, a glass cockpit with configurable hands-on-throttle-and-stick systems, and navigation integrating NavIC with GPS and GLONASS. Zero-zero ejection seats are mandatory. The aircraft must resist departures and automatically recover if controls are released.

Embedded simulation is a major requirement. The trainers must feature virtual avionics and electronic warfare suites, simulate missile seeker heads mid-flight, and connect via secure data links to 360-degree dome simulators under a Live-Virtual-Constructive environment. Holographic debriefing is also specified.

Operational demands include refuelling and rearming within 30 minutes, engine changes within an hour, AI-based predictive maintenance and open architecture for future upgrades from multiple vendors. These requirements reflect the IAF’s intent to prepare pilots for the complexities of modern air combat.

Several aircraft are likely contenders. The Boeing–SAAB T-7 Red Hawk, Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master and KAI T-50 Golden Eagle are among the frontrunners. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has pitched the TEJAS as a lead-in fighter trainer and is developing the HLFT-42, showcased at Aero India 2023.

The demand for 150 trainers, well above the current fleet, signals a broader shift in training philosophy. It reflects a proactive approach to modernisation, ensuring that future pilots are trained on platforms that mirror the capabilities of next-generation fighters.

India pursues France’s Sixth‑Generation Fighter Jet Program to secure future combat aviation technologies

India’s interest in France’s sixth‑generation fighter jet program represents a calculated attempt to secure a place in the next era of air combat while reinforcing its strategic partnership with Paris, Junaid Kathju of South China Morning Post reported.

The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is designed to integrate piloted fighters with drones, sensors, and combat‑cloud networks, enabling coordinated strikes and real‑time data sharing across battlefields. 

For India, joining FCAS is not about solving immediate shortages but about ensuring long‑term technological parity with rivals such as China.

India’s Air Force currently operates only 29 fighter squadrons against an authorised strength of 42, leaving it short by nearly one‑third. With ageing Jaguar squadrons due for retirement between 2028 and the mid‑2030s, the deficit could deepen.

Analysts caution that FCAS, expected to be operational around 2040, will not address this near‑term gap. Instead, it positions India to absorb fifth‑ and sixth‑generation fighters simultaneously, alongside its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

France’s split with Germany in 2026 over disputes on leadership, workshare, and intellectual property created an opening for India. Paris is now seeking partners to share costs and provide industrial depth. India offers a large aerospace base, skilled manpower, and a growing defence manufacturing ecosystem. India’s state-run aerospace and defence giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited announced its June-quarter earnings on Wednesday, posting a consolidated net profit of ₹1,589.68 crore compared with ₹1,383.77 crore in the same period last year.

On a standalone basis, net profit stood at ₹1,580.61 crore, marking a 14.8% increase. Revenue from operations rose to ₹5,515.28 crore, up from ₹4,819.14 crore a year earlier, underscoring strong demand for HAL’s defence manufacturing capabilities.

Total income for the quarter reached ₹6,415 crore, while expenses increased to ₹4,263 crore, reflecting a 15% rise. Earnings per share improved to ₹23.77 from ₹20.69 in the previous year. HAL’s consolidated EBITDA rose 19% year-on-year to ₹1,538 crore, with margins improving to 27.9%. This performance highlights efficiency gains despite supply-chain challenges.

Shares of HAL surged as much as 3% after the results before settling 1.2% higher. The stock has already gained about 14% in 2026, delivering multiyear returns of 161% over three years and 800% over five years. HAL’s market capitalisation now exceeds ₹3.36 lakh crore, cementing its position as one of India’s most valuable defence companies.

The Indian Air Force and the Royal Malaysian Air Force commenced Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 at Subang Air Base in Selangor on 13 August. The exercise is a bilateral program designed to enhance operational learning, exchange best practices and strengthen interoperability between the two air forces.

According to the Indian Air Force, air warriors from both nations are engaged in joint field training and Subject Matter Expert exchanges. The collaborative spirit was highlighted in the IAF’s message: “Train together. Learn together. Operate together.”

The exercise involves four Indian Rafale fighters from 101 Squadron and two C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft from 81 Squadron, marking the Rafale’s first participation in Udara Shakti since its induction in 2020. Malaysia has deployed two Su-30MKM fighters from No. 12 Squadron, two F/A-18D Hornets from No. 18 Squadron, and one Airbus A400M transport aircraft from No. 8 Squadron.

The opening ceremony was held at the Air Warfare Centre Auditorium, Subang Air Base, on 10 August. It was officiated jointly by Colonel Shamsul Shahreen Isa of the RMAF and Group Captain Parijat Jha of the IAF, with the symbolic pinning of exercise patches. The exercise runs from 10 to 14 August and includes a three-day flying phase from 11 to 13 August. Beyond flying, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges provide a platform for discussions on collective training concepts, integrated operations, doctrine development, scenario planning and the role of science and technology in modern military training. Exercise Udara Shakti is a biennial bilateral initiative. Previous editions in 2018, 2022 and 2024 saw Indian Su-30MKI fighters participate, but 2026 marks the debut of Rafales in Malaysia.

The exercise is being conducted during the transit of the Indian contingent following its participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia, which concluded on 7 August. That multinational program involved 100 aircraft and 2,500 personnel from 20 nations, including India and Malaysia.

Pitch Black 2026 featured the debut of Japan’s F-35 Lightning II and Indonesia’s T-50I Golden Eagle jets, alongside embedded personnel from Finland and Sweden. Aircraft from the United States, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Germany, France and Spain also participated, with embedded personnel from New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, Brunei and Malaysia. Air Commodore Matthew McCormack, Exercise Commander, emphasised the importance of such high-end training activities.

Officials have confirmed that Indian companies will play the lead role in the program, ensuring significant domestic participation in manufacturing.

Mahindra Defence has partnered with Brazil’s Embraer to offer the C-390 Millennium transport aircraft. TATA has joined forces with Lockheed Martin to propose the C-130, which is already in service with the IAF for special operations.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is also in contention, with plans to collaborate with original equipment manufacturers to build the aircraft in India. This competitive field highlights the growing emphasis on joint ventures between Indian defence firms and global aerospace giants.

Under the program, around 20 per cent of the aircraft will be inducted in fly-away condition, while the remaining majority will be manufactured domestically. More than 60 per cent indigenous content is expected, covering structural assemblies, avionics, and systems integration.

HAL is expected to play a central role in ensuring that the aircraft are built in India through these joint ventures, thereby boosting local aerospace capabilities.

The Indian Air Force currently operates 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which have been deployed extensively for special operations, humanitarian missions, and tactical transport. In parallel, the IAF is working with Airbus on the C-295 transport aircraft program, with around 70 aircraft planned for induction. Most of these will be manufactured in India, further consolidating the country’s transport aviation ecosystem.

The new Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) fleet may also be configured for aerial refuelling roles, expanding their utility beyond troop and equipment transport.

This would provide the IAF with greater flexibility in sustaining long-range operations and enhancing its rapid deployment capability across diverse theatres, including high-altitude regions and forward bases.

IAF Launches Global Hunt For Ageing Hawk Successor To Train Future Fighter Pilots


The Indian Air Force has initiated the long-awaited process to replace its Hawk MK-132 advanced jet trainers, issuing a Request for Information to both Indian and global manufacturers for around 150 aircraft, The New Indian Express reported.

These Stage-III (F) trainers will be the final step before pilots move into operational fighter squadrons. They are expected to familiarise young pilots with airborne radars, electronic warfare systems and beyond-visual-range missiles before they graduate to frontline fighters such as the Rafale and Tejas, and eventually the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.

Responses to the RFI are due by October 5, with trials to be conducted in India on a no-cost-no-commitment basis. The program remains at the market-sounding stage, with the RFP scheduled for December 2027.

Deliveries are to be completed within 60 months of the contract’s effective date, meaning the first aircraft is unlikely to reach a training base before the mid-2030s. The IAF has specified “Buy (Indian) or better” as the preferred procurement category, requiring manufacturers to detail the scope of technology transfer they can offer.

Foreign contenders are expected to include Leonardo’s M-346 Master and Korea Aerospace Industries’ T-50 family, while Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.'s proposed HLFT-42 is the principal Indian option. The procurement will follow a single-stage, two-envelope process, with technical and commercial bids submitted separately. Aircraft that clear technical evaluation will undergo field trials in India before the contract is awarded to the lowest technically compliant bidder.

The IAF has contracted 106 Hawk MK-132 aircraft in two tranches. The first contract in 2004 covered 66 aircraft, with 24 supplied directly from the UK and 42 licence-produced by HAL. A further 40 were contracted in 2010.

The sanctioned strength was 106, while the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence recorded 104 in 2017-18. The figure of 123 includes 17 aircraft ordered for the Indian Navy. The Hawk entered service in 2008 and has been the principal Stage-III trainer for nearly two decades.

The need for a successor is not simply about ageing airframes. The combat environment has changed substantially, with modern fighters relying on networked sensors, electronic warfare, long-range missiles and sophisticated data links.

The IAF wants these capabilities reflected in the new trainer. The global Hawk production line has closed, and the UK has also issued an RFI for a successor, pursuing Boeing’s T-7 training system in partnership with BAE Systems and Saab.

India’s experience with indigenous trainer programs has been marked by delays. The HTT-40 basic trainer, cleared for 106 aircraft in 2020 and contracted for 70, saw its first series-production aircraft fly only in October 2025, eight years after its prototype.

Delays in Honeywell engine supply highlighted dependence on imported components. Similar vulnerabilities exist with the TEJAS MK-1A, which faces delays in GE Aerospace engine deliveries. The HJT-36, renamed Yashas, has been in development for two decades, while HAL’s HLFT-42 remains at the design stage.

The new trainer is expected to incorporate advanced features. The RFI calls for fly-by-wire controls, a glass cockpit with configurable HOTAS, navigation integrating NavIC with GPS and GLONASS, and zero-zero ejection seats.

The aircraft must be resistant to departures and capable of automatic recovery. Embedded simulation is a major shift, with requirements for virtual avionics, electronic warfare suites, and missile seeker head simulation. A secure data link will connect the aircraft with a full-motion dome simulator and scenario generator in a Live-Virtual-Constructive environment, with holographic debriefing support.

Operational requirements include hot refuelling and rearming within 30 minutes, engine changes within an hour, AI-based predictive maintenance and open architecture for future upgrades.

The IAF continues to operate with 29 fighter squadrons against an authorised strength of 42.5, limiting the use of frontline aircraft for training. The new trainer is intended to bridge the gap between current fighters and next-generation combat aircraft, while reducing pressure on operational squadrons.
