India’s Indigenous Fighter Ambition Hits Its Toughest Test: Building The Engine


India has spent almost four decades trying to develop a fighter aircraft engine of its own. Yet every fighter jet currently operated by the Indian Air Force still depends on a powerplant developed abroad. The situation exposes one of the most difficult gaps in India’s defence-industrial ambitions, wrote Palak Gupta in an exhaustive analysis piece on CNBCTV18.

The country has made significant progress in aircraft design, missiles, radars, air-defence systems and unmanned platforms. However, it has not yet produced an indigenous fighter engine powerful and reliable enough to propel a frontline combat aircraft. The TEJAS, India’s home-grown light combat aircraft, flies with the GE F404 engine developed by General Electric in the United States.

The initial versions of India’s fifth-generation stealth fighter, now being designed under the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, or AMCA, project, are also expected to use a foreign engine. Both the TEJAS and AMCA are described as indigenous aircraft programs. Neither, however, currently has an indigenous fighter engine.

This dependence has remained one of the most persistent weaknesses in India’s pursuit of strategic autonomy.

The Kaveri Story

India’s effort to develop a domestic fighter engine began in 1986. The Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment, or GTRE, in Bangalore proposed the development of what later became known as the Kaveri engine. The Government of India formally sanctioned the project in March 1989. The initial sanctioned cost was approximately ₹383 crore. The engine was designed to generate roughly 85 kilonewtons of thrust.

That level of thrust was considered necessary to power a fighter aircraft such as the proposed Light Combat Aircraft, which eventually became the TEJAS. The Kaveri represented a major technological challenge for India. It involved the development of a complete military turbofan, including the fan, compressor, combustor, turbine, afterburner, control systems and high-temperature materials required for sustained operation. The engine’s core, along with its predecessor known as the Kabini, was sent to Russia for high-altitude testing. The testing was conducted in three spells beginning in August 1998.

The details were later disclosed in a written reply given in the Lok Sabha in 2005 by then Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The tests revealed that the engine had not achieved the performance required by the TEJAS. Its thrust fell short of the aircraft’s requirements. The engine also faced problems linked to weight, reliability, materials and high-temperature performance. India subsequently selected the American-made GE F404 engine for the TEJAS.

By the late 2000s, after years of ground and high-altitude testing, the Kaveri had been separated from the TEJAS program as the aircraft’s indigenous engine option. The decision allowed the TEJAS project to move forward, but it also confirmed the seriousness of India’s fighter-engine challenge.

Where Kaveri Stands Today

The Kaveri engine has not been abandoned. Instead, the experience gained from the original project is being used for more specialised applications and redesigned derivatives. A non-afterburning version, known as the Kaveri Dry Engine, has reportedly demonstrated approximately 49 to 52 kilonewtons of thrust. That output is substantially below what is required for a conventional manned fighter. It could nevertheless be suitable for an unmanned combat aircraft.

One possible application is the Ghatak, India’s stealth unmanned combat air vehicle being developed by the DRDO. The dry engine does not require an afterburner. This reduces complexity and makes it more practical for an unmanned platform whose design requirements differ from those of a high-performance manned fighter. The engine could give the Kaveri project a meaningful operational role. It would also allow Indian engineers to gain additional experience in engine integration, flight testing, production and long-term maintenance.

The Kaveri derivative is reported to be aimed at producing approximately 50 kilonewtons of thrust. For fighter aircraft, the DRDO is also pursuing a redesigned higher-thrust version commonly referred to as Kaveri 2.0. This version is associated with a reported thrust target of around 90 kilonewtons.

Kaveri 2.0 is not simply an attempt to restart the original engine. The objective is to build on the knowledge obtained from the earlier Kaveri effort while incorporating new design approaches, improved materials and better manufacturing methods. The redesigned engine is intended to reflect the lessons learned from decades of testing and development. Even so, the more powerful engine required for the AMCA remains a separate and more demanding challenge.

The AMCA Engine Contest

India is examining foreign partnerships for the high-thrust engine needed by later versions of the AMCA. The aircraft’s initial prototypes are expected to use the GE F414 engine. The F414 is a more powerful engine than the F404 and is intended to support the early flight-testing and development stages of the AMCA. The long-term objective, however, is to equip later versions with a powerplant controlled and manufactured domestically. France’s Safran and India’s GTRE have proposed jointly developing a new fighter engine.

The proposed project has been reported to involve an estimated cost of approximately ₹61,000 crore. The partnership model is intended to go beyond the purchase of completed foreign engines. India wants a role in design, manufacturing, testing, intellectual property and the development of advanced technologies. The hot section is especially important. It includes the combustor, turbine and associated components that operate under extreme temperatures and pressures. UK’s Rolls-Royce has also emerged as a contender.

In August 2026, Rolls-Royce announced a strategic intent to work with Reliance Industries on an indigenous combat engine for the AMCA. The proposal involves cooperation in the design, development, manufacture and delivery of an Indian combat engine. Reports have indicated that the Rolls-Royce proposal includes extensive technology transfer and Indian intellectual property. If a contract were signed by the end of 2026, the proposed schedule could involve engine-core testing by 2030. The first flight of an aircraft powered by the new engine could potentially take place by 2034. Production could begin around 2036. These dates remain projected milestones rather than confirmed commitments.

Neither the Safran-GTRE proposal nor the Rolls-Royce-Reliance proposal has yet resulted in a signed development contract. The competition is significant because India is seeking access to fighter-engine technology that only a small number of countries have mastered. The United States, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and China (though not independently verified) are generally regarded as the only countries with demonstrated capabilities to design and manufacture modern fighter engines at scale.

The AMCA engine decision will therefore have consequences well beyond a single aircraft project. It could determine whether India becomes capable of independently designing, producing, upgrading and exporting advanced combat aircraft.

Why Fighter Engines Are Difficult

Fighter engines are difficult to develop because they must combine high thrust, low weight, compact dimensions, rapid acceleration and long-term reliability. They must operate safely across a wide range of speeds, altitudes and temperatures. The challenge is not limited to aerodynamic design. Materials science and manufacturing precision are equally important. A modern fighter engine can operate at temperatures exceeding the melting point of some of the metals used in its components. This is possible only through the use of advanced cooling systems, specialised alloys, ceramic coatings, precision manufacturing and tightly controlled production processes. The turbine blades are among the most technically demanding components.

They must withstand extreme temperatures, intense centrifugal forces, rapid rotational speeds and repeated thermal cycles. Their performance depends on advanced metallurgy, single-crystal or directionally solidified structures, internal cooling passages and protective coatings. India’s engineers have repeatedly identified the Kaveri’s hot section and related materials technologies as central obstacles. The engine’s ability to produce thrust was affected by difficulties in achieving the necessary turbine temperatures and pressure ratios.

The development of suitable blades, coatings and combustion technologies requires long-term experimentation. It also requires production facilities capable of maintaining extremely narrow tolerances. A design can succeed on paper and still fail during production if the industrial base cannot manufacture components consistently.

Engine development also depends on extensive testing. India historically lacked a domestic high-altitude testing facility capable of fully evaluating engines of this class. As a result, the Kaveri program relied on testing facilities and flying testbeds in Russia.

The proposed Safran-GTRE and Rolls-Royce-Reliance partnerships could provide another route towards a domestically controlled high-thrust engine. The outcome will depend on whether India secures genuine technology access rather than limited manufacturing participation. It will also depend on the ability of the government, public-sector organisations and private industry to maintain funding and technical continuity over several decades.

The propulsion gap is therefore doing more than exposing a weakness. It is changing how India approaches strategic technology development. The country is bringing private industry into major defence projects earlier. It is keeping competing foreign technology options open. It is attempting to establish manufacturing relationships before the engine itself enters service

India’s fighter-engine journey has not yet produced the desired frontline powerplant. But it has helped create an increasingly experienced domestic propulsion ecosystem. The next phase will determine whether that experience can be converted into a reliable, high-thrust engine for India’s future combat aircraft.

The success or failure of that effort could shape the country’s aerospace ambitions for decades.

HAL Seals Deal With KNDS For 126 THL20 Turrets To Boost Light Combat Helicopter Prachand Firepower


Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has formally signed a contract with KNDS on 17 September 2026 for the supply of 126 THL20 turrets to equip the Light Combat Helicopter Prachand fleet.

This agreement represents a significant milestone in strengthening the helicopter’s firepower and is closely aligned with India’s defence modernisation program.

The supplier, KNDS, is a leading European defence group formed by the merger of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter Defence Systems. The turrets are newly manufactured and built around the 20M621 gun, which uses NATO-standard 20×102mm ammunition.

They are designed for seamless compatibility with the Prachand’s sighting and fire-control systems, ensuring smooth integration into the helicopter’s existing architecture.

KNDS has a proven track record in India, having earlier supplied 136 THL20 turrets for the Advanced Light Helicopter. This precedent demonstrates the company’s reliability and experience in supporting Indian rotary-wing platforms. The THL20 itself is derived from the THL30 turret already in service on Tiger attack helicopters, giving it a strong pedigree in combat aviation.

The turret features a lightweight and compact design optimised for helicopter integration. Its low recoil system ensures stability during firing, while advanced sighting integration provides high accuracy. These attributes make it particularly effective for close air support and anti-armour missions, enhancing the operational role of the Prachand in high-altitude combat environments.

Although the turrets are imported, the deal is aligned with the ‘Make in India’ initiative. KNDS has expanded partnerships with Indian firms such as SMPP for ammunition production, thereby contributing to domestic capability building. The company also supplies 30mm 30M791 guns for Rafale aircraft and precision-guided munitions, further strengthening its footprint in India’s defence ecosystem.

Strategically, the integration of the THL20 turrets will enhance the Prachand’s combat effectiveness. The helicopter is already armed with Dhruvastra anti-tank guided missiles, Mistral-2 air-to-air missiles, 70mm rockets, and a chin-mounted cannon. The addition of the THL20 turrets ensures greater versatility and precision in close combat scenarios.

There are, however, risks and trade-offs associated with the contract. India will remain dependent on a European supplier for spares and upgrades, which could have cost implications compared to indigenous turret development.

Integration timelines must also align with HAL’s delivery schedule for 156 Prachand helicopters, beginning in 2028 under contracts worth ₹62,700 crore signed with the Ministry of Defence.

This contract underscores HAL’s commitment to equipping the Prachand fleet with advanced weapon systems while balancing indigenous development with selective imports.

It strengthens India’s defence industrial base, enhances the helicopter’s firepower, and ensures that the Prachand remains a formidable platform in the years ahead.

Indian Navy's Bid For Badangi Airstrip Land Gains Momentum


The Indian Navy has formally advanced its proposal to acquire nearly ₹1,700 acres of land at the Badangi Airstrip in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh.

The site, located near Bobbili, is earmarked for the creation of a major naval armament depot, a training facility, and an emergency alternate airbase. This initiative is designed to supplement the existing Naval Armament Depot in Visakhapatnam, which has reached its storage limits.

The land requirement has grown significantly from the original 221-acre footprint established during the Second World War. Earlier estimates had suggested a need for 1,000 to 1,200 acres, but the latest evaluations have expanded this to approximately 1,700 acres.

Defence and Navy teams have already inspected the site, including portions encroached upon by farmers, following clearance queries raised by the Ministry of Defence.

The Badangi Airstrip carries historical weight, having been constructed by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. At its peak, it was one of British India’s largest bases, equipped with underground bunkers and a substantial armament depot.

However, it was abandoned after 1946, leaving behind infrastructure that has remained dormant for decades.

The revival of Badangi has been under consideration for over 15 years, but the push has gained renewed urgency in late 2026. The driver behind this effort is the inadequacy of the Visakhapatnam Naval Armament Depot, which cannot accommodate the growing storage requirements of the Navy. The new facility at Badangi would provide the necessary depth and resilience, while also serving as a training ground and an alternate landing base in emergencies.

Strategically, the location offers proximity to Visakhapatnam, India’s Eastern Naval Command headquarters, and provides a fall back option in case of operational contingencies.

The depot would enhance India’s ability to store, manage, and deploy critical armaments, strengthening the Navy’s logistics footprint in the eastern seaboard.

The inspection and verification of lands, including those currently under cultivation, indicate that the project is moving closer to formalisation. Once approved, the Badangi facility would represent a significant expansion of India’s naval infrastructure, blending historical legacy with modern strategic requirements.

The pursuit of this project reflects India’s broader defence modernisation program, which seeks to expand storage, training, and operational capabilities across multiple theatres. The Badangi revival, if realised, would mark a major milestone in this trajectory, reinforcing India’s maritime preparedness and resilience.

US Lawmakers Warn Russia Sanctions Bill Hands Trump Sweeping Tariff Powers


Several US lawmakers have voiced strong reservations about the sweeping Russia sanctions bill passed by the House of Representatives, arguing that it hands President Donald Trump excessively broad tariff powers.

The measure, formally titled the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, cleared the House by 262 votes to 159 and now advances to Trump for enactment.

The legislation is designed to target Russian officials, financial institutions and economic sectors, while also expanding sanctions against vessels forming part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet used to sustain energy exports in defiance of Western restrictions.

A central provision empowers the President to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on the five largest importers of Russian petroleum or natural gas.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal explained her opposition by stating that while she supports Ukraine, she could not endorse a bill that grants Trump “incredibly broad authority to impose tariffs” without adequate safeguards. She added that Trump has “repeatedly abused tariffs to exact revenge for petty grievances” and questioned whether he would use the new authority responsibly.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar also rejected the measure, contending that it “will do nothing to hold Russia accountable” and instead “gives Trump broad authority to expand his reckless tariffs.” Similarly, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney said she supported provisions aimed at holding Russia accountable but could not back legislation that hands Trump sweeping tariff powers against major trading partners.

The bill creates a statutory pathway for the US to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from India if defined conditions concerning Russian energy purchases are met. However, it does not itself impose such tariffs on Indian goods, leaving the decision to the executive branch. India and China, as major buyers of Russian crude, are explicitly identified as principal targets of the tariff clauses.

The Senate had previously approved the legislation by 86 votes to 11 on August 7, though its progress in the House slowed amid disputes over the tariff provisions and their potential impact on US trade policy.

Supporters argue that the measure will intensify economic pressure on Russia and force President Vladimir Putin towards negotiations. Congressman Michael McCaul declared that the bill would “cripple Russia’s war machine and finally bring Putin to the negotiating table.”

With House passage secured, the bill now moves to Trump for his signature. If enacted, it would provide the administration with expanded sanctions and tariff authorities aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia and countries continuing significant trade in Russian energy.

The debate underscores the tension between bipartisan support for Ukraine and concerns over granting Trump discretionary powers that could reshape US trade relations with key partners such as India and China.

India–Russia Defence Ties Shift Gears: From Arms Sales To Joint Production And Next-Gen Weapons


India and Russia are seeking to expand their defence partnership beyond traditional arms sales, moving towards joint production, technology transfers and next‑generation weapons development.

The modernisation of BrahMos missiles and Russia’s offer to transfer technology for Su‑57 stealth fighter jets have emerged as central themes in this evolving relationship.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in New Delhi ahead of the BRICS summit, where their warm exchange was highlighted by Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal as evidence of a bond that continues to strengthen.

Analysts observed that the meeting reflected a recalibration of defence ties, with emphasis on industrial collaboration and export‑oriented weapons development.

Former diplomat Srikumar Menon noted that discussions on BrahMos modernisation and Su‑57 technology transfer demonstrated the growing maturity and strategic sophistication of bilateral defence cooperation.

India has long relied on Russian equipment, but in recent years has diversified purchases from France, the United States and Israel to access advanced technologies and reduce risks linked to Russia’s supply chain disruptions during the Ukraine war.

Menon explained that Western sanctions since 2022 have restricted Russia’s access to advanced components, which in turn affected supplies to India. This has encouraged both nations to pursue joint production, localisation and technology transfer under India’s Make in India program launched in 2014.

The BrahMos missile system exemplifies this approach. Capable of travelling at three times the speed of sound and being launched from land, sea, air or underwater, it has already attracted export interest. 

The Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam have signed agreements to acquire the system, while Malaysia has initiated exploratory talks. No new contract was announced after the Modi‑Putin meeting, but S Balakrishnan of the Indic Researchers Forum said the talks elevated the political priority of next‑generation BrahMos work already underway.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that both nations are jointly producing BrahMos missiles and emphasised the need to improve them with additional characteristics to enhance competitiveness and effectiveness.

Proposals include a lighter variant for TEJAS jets, a submarine‑launched version and a hypersonic model capable of reaching five times the speed of sound. Balakrishnan argued that the next step should be to move from joint production of existing weapons to joint development of future systems.

India’s fighter fleet is another major focus. Discussions include a ₹91,300 crore program to upgrade the Su‑30MKI fleet, which remains the backbone of the Indian Air Force, alongside Russia’s proposal for joint development of the Su‑57 stealth fighter.

India is also developing its own fifth‑generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, but faces challenges in securing an engine. Baloch Liberation Army Claims Khuzdar Strike Under 'Operation Marg-E-Gaddaran', Five Killed


The Baloch Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack near the compound of Shafiq-ur-Rehman Mengal in Khuzdar, alleging that five people, including a police officer, were killed in the operation. The incident was reported by The Balochistan Post.

According to the statement, BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch said the group’s fighters targeted what it described as an “important and active base” belonging to Mengal in the Awak area of Aranji, Wadh. The organisation claimed that all five armed men present at the site were associated with an alleged “death squad”.

The BLA further stated that its fighters seized weapons and other military equipment following the attack. Those killed were identified as Abdul Hayee, Naimatullah, Yahya, Naseer Ahmed and Noora Mohammad Zai. The group accused Noora Mohammad, described as a police officer, of working for the alleged “death squad” under the cover of a government uniform.

The attack was described as part of the BLA’s “Operation Marg-e-Gaddaran”, or “Death to Traitors”, which had been announced earlier this year against individuals and armed groups accused of operating under state patronage.

The spokesperson linked this operation to the BLA’s Majeed Brigade attack on Mengal’s main compound in Khuzdar on July 8, where the group claimed 34 of Mengal’s associates were killed, while Mengal himself escaped in a bulletproof vehicle.

The BLA said that under “Operation Marg-e-Gaddaran”, it would continue targeting what it calls “traitors” and their operatives. The organisation claimed that its military units remained continuously active in destroying alleged secret bases. It also issued what it described as a final warning to people associated with Mengal or other alleged “death squads”.

The statement urged those individuals to sever ties, end intelligence or military cooperation, and return to civilian life. The BLA said that those who withdrew from such associations would not be harmed. However, it warned that anyone continuing to provide information or assistance to Mengal would be regarded as a “national traitor” and directly targeted.

The group further declared that “Operation Marg-e-Gaddaran” would continue “with full intensity and strength” until, in its words, Balochistan had been “completely purged of traitors”. For the year 2027, the United States has placed India alongside more than twenty other countries on its designated list of major drug-producing or transit nations.

This roster includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. American officials clarified that inclusion on the list does not necessarily indicate failure by national governments to combat narcotics. Instead, countries are featured due to geographical, commercial, and agricultural realities that make them natural hubs or transit corridors, regardless of domestic enforcement efforts.

Trump shifted focus to domestic and hemispheric security, emphasising what he described as historic progress by his administration in dismantling drug cartels and narcoterrorism networks.

He pointed to stricter border controls, claiming that drug interceptions along the US southern border had fallen by more than half compared to what he termed four years of open-border instability under previous policies. He further asserted that national overdose fatalities had sharply decreased, attributing these developments to the preservation of tens of thousands of American lives.

The President declared that narco-terrorists responsible for what he called an invasion were either dead, imprisoned, or living in fear of imminent American justice. He added that the US military now holds authorisation to strike external narco-terrorist threats directly.

Two Terrorists Gunned Down In Udhampur Encounter, Search Operations Continue


At least two terrorists were neutralised in a fierce encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district late on Wednesday evening.

The incident unfolded after suspicious movement was reported from Majalta, prompting joint forces to launch a cordon and search operation. Contact was soon established with the terrorists, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Officials confirmed that during the ensuing gunfight, two terrorists were killed. The operation remains ongoing in the area, with the exact identity of the slain terrorists yet to be ascertained. Security forces continue to maintain a strong presence to ensure no further infiltration or escape attempts.

The operation was initially spearheaded by the Jammu and Kashmir Police along with special Para troopers of the Indian Army. Reinforcements were rushed to the site immediately after the encounter began, strengthening the cordon and intensifying the search grid.

A joint team comprising the Indian Army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police is conducting extensive searches in the region. Sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance are being deployed to sanitise the area and track any remaining terrorists.

This encounter comes amid heightened security activity in the Pir Panjal region. Recently, Rajouri Police arrested three individuals linked to an alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba overground worker network. The accused, identified as Zakir Hussain, Mohd Azam, and Mohd Mushtaq, were apprehended on 15 September in connection with a terror module operating in the area.

Security forces have placed the Udhampur-Reasi range under high alert, with vehicle checking and tight cordons enforced across strategic routes. The hilly districts of Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Kathua, Poonch, and Rajouri remain under special focus due to reported movements of hardcore Pakistani terrorists in these inaccessible terrains.

Anti-terror operations in the region have been ongoing for more than six months. These sustained efforts have led to the neutralisation of several top terrorists.

The broader advantage of such operations lies in keeping militants constantly on the run, preventing them from establishing a foothold to plan or execute attacks against security forces, the Army, or civilians.

US Forces Sink Refuelling Station Linked To Los Choneros NARCO‑Trafficking


US forces have interdicted and sunk a floating refuelling station in the Eastern Pacific, which the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) said was supporting illicit drug trafficking operations.

The operation took place on Wednesday under the direction of Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF‑WHEM).

Intelligence assessments linked the vessel to the Los Choneros organisation, a violent narco‑terrorist group based in Ecuador.

SOUTHCOM confirmed that individuals removed from the vessel were handed over to Ecuadorian authorities. After clearing the vessel and disembarking the crew, US forces deliberately sank it. The command emphasised that the operation was conducted in coordination with Ecuadorian partners and formed part of a broader campaign to dismantle logistical networks sustaining narco‑trafficking across the Western Hemisphere.

General Francis L Donovan, Commander of SOUTHCOM, stated that the operation was lawful, deliberate and precise. He added that such actions save lives and enhance security for citizens from Ecuador to the United States. Donovan stressed that narco‑terrorists undermine hemispheric security and leave death and suffering in their wake, and that the US military remains committed to pursuing them relentlessly.

The interdiction follows the establishment of JTF‑WHEM in August 2026 as a purpose‑built joint task force designed to synchronise US military operations with allies and partners.

The task force provides unified command and control at tactical and operational levels, integrating military capabilities with the 18 partner nations of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C). Its mission is to increase operational effectiveness against threats that destabilise the region and to strengthen rapid response capacity for contingencies and humanitarian crises.

SOUTHCOM’s August release highlighted that malign actors threaten national security, destabilise the region and exploit vulnerable populations.

Donovan explained that JTF‑WHEM strengthens cooperation with allies, synchronises military capabilities and applies sustained pressure against criminal networks. He underlined that the task force is changing the way threats are confronted across the hemisphere.

US Marine Corps Major General Kevin Jarrard was appointed to command JTF‑WHEM. He previously led US military support to State Department‑led disaster relief operations after the June 2026 earthquakes in Venezuela. SOUTHCOM described JTF‑WHEM as its operational headquarters for missions across the region, integrating intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, operational planning and multinational coordination.

The task force, working with A3C partners, is intended to strengthen intelligence sharing, expand combined training, enhance interoperability, support maritime interdiction, build partner capacity and remain prepared to deliver humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Donovan characterised JTF‑WHEM as SOUTHCOM’s action arm for confronting threats across the hemisphere, bringing together tailored military capabilities and trusted partnerships to impose sustained pressure on criminal organisations.

The activation of JTF‑WHEM reinforces SOUTHCOM’s commitment to a whole‑of‑government and multinational approach to defending the homeland, strengthening regional partnerships and promoting a secure, stable and prosperous Western Hemisphere.
